(May 21, 2023) SPEEDWAY, In- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Now that upstart Indy 500 entrant ABEL Motorsports of Louisville, KY and their rookie driver RC Enerson of New Port Richey, FL have earned the 29th starting position for Sunday’s 107th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge the team’s focus moves to finding the right setup in race trim. Making a current-generation IndyCar fast for 4 laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway requires one sort of setup sheet. Making the #50 car fast and reliable for all 200 laps/500 miles of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” requires a completely different range of adjustments and settings on the Chevy/Dallara race car.
That’s not the only challenge facing Team Manager John Brunner and his crew. They will have limited practice time Monday and Friday of this week to make the ABEL Motorsports entry a serious challenger for honors next Sunday afternoon at the Speedway. “We have some tremendously talented guys who’ve built this car, and who are working on it this month to give us a real shot” commented Brunner. “They’ve done an amazing job so far and we know that will continue.”
First-year 500 competitor Enerson, 26, is also set for the challenge. “Now that we’re in I can relax. We had a very solid run in qualifying, and that was our plan all along, to just have to make one run to get in the show. We’ll go through all the data and see what we need to do to get set as far as race trim is concerned. We’ll be ready for practice and Carb Day for sure.”
Team Principal Bill Abel is still elated at his rookie team’s effort and performance. “I’m now finally starting to wrap my brain around what we’ve been able to do so far. It’s just amazing. The support we’re getting from Chevrolet has been outstanding. Our “stretch goal” was to be in the show (Saturday). We figured we might have to come back and run on Sunday but it wasn’t necessary.”
Next up for ABEL Motorsports and RC Enerson: a two-hour practice session at IMS starting at 1PM ET Monday, May 22 (live on Peacock and the IMS Radio Network) followed by the traditional “Carb Day” final practice Friday, May 26 from 11AM-1PM (live on Peacock and the IMS Radio Network).
