Second Top-Five Finish for Abel in the 2022 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Championship

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Speedway, Ind. (June 15, 2022) – Jacob Abel and the No. 51 Abel Construction team scored their second top-five finish of the season, this time at the legendary Road America. Abel currently sits ninth in the driver standings, only 34 points out of the lead for Rookie of the Year.

After a podium finish at Road America last year in the Indy Pro 2000 category, Abel was excited to get to Road America and see what he could do in the more powerful Dallara IL-15. Abel immediately felt comfortable with his car during practice and qualifying, making minimal setup changes. Qualifying did not show the outright speed of the No. 51, qualifying ninth, but the team knew the car would be fast in race trim.

Raceday saw action from the drop of the green flag through the conclusion of the 20-lap event. Jacob Abel immediately got to work from his 9th place starting position and began to battle his way to the front. Abel got the jump on three cars and began to settle into 6th place. After a few laps of getting into rhythm, the Indy Lights Grand Prix of Road America saw a red flag after Christian Bogle was involved in an incident that saw the car tear part of the fencing down. The race was ultimately pushed to later in the day as fence repairs were needed.

Abel resumed the race in the fifth position, and immediately picked up a spot on the opening lap when Frost ran wide and ended up in the grass. Abel’s attention then turned to the battle for fourth place that he was in with series points leader Linus Lundqvist. As the race began to come to an end, Abel found himself in a battle with Matthew Brabham for the 5th position. Ultimately Abel managed to hold him off and gain his second top-five finish of the season.

“With the difficulties we faced in Detroit, to come back and rebound this strong is a great feeling. No one on our Abel Motorsports team gave up, they just kept working and gave me the car and the opportunity to go out and compete. Overall, it was a great weekend, we had great speed and a car that was comfortable in traffic. We now have a few weeks off before Mid-Ohio, but we will be ready to see if we can’t challenge for a podium,” said Jacob Abel

Next for the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires teams and drivers, is round 8 of the 2022 championship at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington Ohio on July 3rd. Mid-Ohio was very favorable for Jacob Abel and Abel Motorsports last year, as the pairing had a podium finish last year in Indy Pro 2000 and a race win in a formula car event.
