FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Speedway, Ind. (July 26, 2022) – Jacob Abel made his oval debut in the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires series at the Iowa Speedway and wound up bringing the No. 51 Abel Construction Dallara home in the 6th position.
Having only made 5 previous oval starts in the Indy Pro 2000 series, Abel and team knew they had their work cut out for them to get Jacob comfortable.
Looking like a veteran right out of the gate in practice, Abel managed to end the session in 5th less than a tenth out of 1st. Abel felt confident in the car and was enjoying getting to better his oval racing craft.
Qualifying saw Abel getting even faster, as he bested his time from practice by more than a tenth of a second. A solid qualifying run put Abel rolling off 6th for the Indy Lights race at Iowa Speedway.
Jacob Abel had a tough start to the 75-lap event, getting passed by a few cars as he was working to find his rhythm and pace in the draft. Once Abel found his rhythm, he began to work his way back towards the top half of the field.
Abel managed to get back to his original starting position of 6th, where he would remain until the conclusion of the race. The 6th place finish at Iowa Speedway was the 7th top ten finish of the season for Abel, who is currently 8th in the driver championship standings.
“We had a solid weekend for our first time on an oval in an Indy Lights car. Oval racing is unlike anything else, so for us to be that competitive right out of the gate is a great feeling. We had a great car in traffic, but it was so tough to pass out there. The Iowa bumps mixed with the draft that our cars create made it really exciting behind the wheel of my No. 51 Abel Construction car. I think we have a really solid oval car, so I can’t wait to see what we can do at World Wide Technology Raceway later in the season,” said Jacob Abel
