FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Speedway, Ind. (July 6, 2022) – It was a disappointing weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for Abel Motorsports and driver Jacob Abel, as the team ended up finishing in eleventh position. Abel currently sits tenth in the 2022 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Championship, only one point out of ninth.
The weekend started off very strong for the Butler University student, as Abel posted the fourth fastest lap of the session. Unfortunately, as Abel was on his final lap of the session, he touched the grass in turn 1 and ended up in the tires. Practice 2 on Saturday saw more of the same, as Abel was once again quick in the No.51 Abel Construction Dallara ending up fifth.
Qualifying however did not end up how Abel and the team had hoped, with Jacob Abel ending up 7th even after posting his fastest lap of the weekend.
Hopes were high heading into race day, as Abel felt very confident in the racecar he had to compete with. The initial lap was a battle right away, as Jacob Abel began to fight with fifth and sixth place.
As Abel settled into his rhythm and continued to fight for fifth place, he noticed that he had used up his rear tires and was struggling for grip. Abel managed as best he could in seventh, but always right there ready to capitalize if the opportunity presented itself.
Heading into the last lap, Abel had closed the gap to sixth, as the fifth and sixth place cars were battling. Abel was ready to make his move in the last turn as fifth and sixth were battling hard, but unfortunately Abel touched the grass on the outside of the turn- and wound-up spinning which changed his finishing position to eleventh.
“That was a tough way to end our weekend here at Mid-Ohio. This is one of the tracks that I have circled on the calendar and showing speed in both practice sessions but not capitalizing on that speed in the race is a bummer. The team and I are working extremely hard, and this won’t deter us from what we have built already this season. I’m fully focused forward on getting back on an oval, and ready to learn a new track in Iowa Speedway,” said Jacob Abel.
Abel Motorsports heads to the first oval event on the 2022 calendar at Iowa Speedway on July 23rd. You can keep up with all the action and news by following @abelmotorsports on social media.
