FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Speedway, Ind. (February 24, 2022) – Abel Motorsports will be making its debut in the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Series this weekend at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Not only will the team be making their first start in the Indy Lights series with series rookie Jacob Abel, but the team has also expanded to a two-car effort with the addition of Antonio Serravalle.
Jacob Abel will be making another step up the ladder to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, this time competing in the Indy Lights Series. Abel has spent much of the off-season testing his No. 51 Abel Construction Dallara in preparation for the upcoming season, and feels that the progress he and the team have made has set them up for succuess. Abel will be led by 14-year Indy Lights race engineer Kent Boyer.
“I’m really excited for this weekend, St. Petersburg has always been a favorite race of mine for a while. It’s the first race of the year, and it’s always nice to head south to the warmer weather and get the season going. We’ve had a lot of time to prepare, about 8 test days, which gave us the opportunity to see our competition while also building on our platform. I would say that our expectations going into this weekend would be a bit lower than we would normaly have going into a race weekend but with how well testing has gone, and my confidence in the team and car I think we will have a very solid weekend if we keep building on what we have already learned,” said Jacob Abel.
In a late addition to the Abel Motorsports driver lineup, Antonio Serravalle joins the team piloting the No. 11. Serravalle is making his return to the Streets of St. Petersburg, after a strong 7th place finish in race 1 last year. Serravalle is paired up with longtime open-wheel engineer Doug Forker.
“I’m really looking forward to being back in an Indy Lights car after a long break. We’re also heading back to one of my favorite tracks in the championship, with amazing fans and that amazing Florida weather! Although we haven’t had any testing over the winter, my team and teammate have, so we’re hoping to build off the progress they already have made,” said Antonio Serravalle
The opening round of the 2022 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship on the Streets of St. Petersburg gets underway on February 25th with 2 practice sessions and qualifying. Round 1 goes green on February 27th at 9:30am ET. Follow the action all weekend long by following @abelmotorsports on social media.
