FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Monterey, CA (September 7, 2022) – Abel Motorsports and driver Jacob Abel worked their way to their best result so far of the 2022 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires season, with a 4th place finish at Portland International Raceway. Flinn Lazier’s Indy Lights debut unfortunately did not go as planned, with contact on lap 1 ending Lazier’s day early.
Abel got underway working his way to the front of the field immediately, as on the opening lap Abel made up two positions putting himself in 6th right as the caution came out on the opening lap. On the restart, Abel made up 2 more positions when a car ran off, and another car made contact with the tires. Abel would be sitting in 4th for the restart.
The field got back to green flag racing on lap 15, and Abel began his hunt to get on the podium. Abel continued to make great pace but unfortunately just did not have enough to catch up to the leaders and had to fend off a challenge from McElrea for 4th. Abel managed to hang on for the remainder of the race and brought the No. 51 Abel Construction car home for its best finish so far this season of 4th.
“It was another great weekend for me and the team at Portland. We once again had the speed and were able to keep our nose clean and get a good result. This season has gone by so quick, but I have really learned a lot and I am excited for another opportunity at Laguna to see what the team and I can do,” said Jacob Abel
Making his Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires debut, Flinn Lazier, was right on pace all weekend. Getting laps under his belt and adjusting to the fierce competition in Indy Lights, Lazier was excited to see what he could do in competition. Unfortunately for Lazier, contact on the opening lap bent suspension on the left side of the car meaning he had to retire from the 35-lap event.
“It was awesome to finally get to a shot to compete in Indy Lights, but a bummer that our race ended so quickly. I had a great start and was following my teammate Jacob to the front, but luck just wasn’t on our side. I’m looking forward to being able to take what I learned this weekend into the last two races of 2022 at Laguna Seca,” said Flinn Lazier.
Abel Motorsports will once again be a two-car effort for the final 2 races of the season at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Keep up with all of the action by following @abelmotorsports on social media.
